The CrossFit Diaries: Charity Challenge Prelim and my Birthday

With a big birthday weekend in store (the cover picture is my plan for tomorrow), I was looking forward to hopefully putting the ledger a little in the negative prior to going full on birthday indulgent this weekend. Mission accomplished:

The Workout:

5 sets of 1 power clean + 2 front squats

In 10 minutes:

Row 1000m then

5 Barbell Thrusters

5 KB Swings (53/35 lbs)

10 Barbell Thrusters

10 KB Swings (53/35 lbs)

15 Barbell Thrusters

15 KB Swings (53/35 lbs)

Climb the ladder as high as possible. Your final score is total reps.

The strength/skill portion was a nice warm up, plus it gave me the chance to work on catching my power cleans in more of a full squat as opposed to a quarter squat. I’ve never really focused on the downward catch, so working on that was some great practice. Didn’t go super heavy, but the weight did get to enough for me to have to really focus on form and catching the weight correctly.

The WOD/Charity Challenge was a surprising and difficult one. I was in the first wave of people. None of us, including the instructor Jason, really knew what to expect. I was the first off the row and into the sets. I got through 5 and 10 without too much difficulty. Then I started on the set of 15 thrusters and just hit a wall. It was all I could do to get through it. Then the 15 kb swings. Brutal. I finished with a completed set of 15 and another 20 thrusters. I had time after the 20 thrusters to try and get some KB swings in, but I just knew I wasn’t going to get anything solid out of it. I was bummed, but was also ready to collapse. I’m happy with my total as it gives me a chance to really try for the most improved. We’ll see. I’m sure it’ll be some tough competition.

Overall the whole thing is pretty cool. You can find out more details around the charity portion here. I’m looking forward to totally blowing up my diet this weekend for my bday, but it’ll be back to the grind on Monday. Have a great weekend, I know I will.

Stay classy.
