The CrossFit Diaries: Charity Challenge Revisited

Saturday was the official Charity Challenge at the gym. We did our baseline back in November and had the official challenge Saturday with the holiday party afterward. I had a holiday gala Friday night, so I tried to do my best to avoid going overboard and did a pretty good job of staying out of trouble. I woke up Saturday morning pretty well rested and ready to take on the challenge. It was snowing and the roads were terrible, so I arrived about 15-20 minutes late, but better safe than sorry.

I was placed in heat number 9, which ended up being the second to last heat. It was me and two other guys. I felt good and we were going right before the “stud” group of guys that were going to be top performers. It was a long wait (over an hour) before I went, but I got warmed up and hung around watching the heats before me go through. In my initial base line (can read it here) I totaled a score of 80, which was getting fully through the set of 15, plus an additional 20 thrusters. I knew with all the work we’ve been doing I’d do better, I just wasn’t sure how much better. As a refresher, here’s the challenge:

The Challenge:

Climb the ladder as high as possible in 10 minutes:

Row 1000m then

5 Barbell Thrusters

5 KB Swings (53/35 lbs)

10 Barbell Thrusters

10 KB Swings (53/35 lbs)

15 Barbell Thrusters

15 KB Swings (53/35 lbs)

At the end I finished the full round of 20 and did an addtional 12 thrusters in the round of 25 for an improvement of 32. It wasn’t enough to take most improved, but it was close. Winner of that did 39 more, so I finished 3rd in that category and was pretty happy. Overall the whole event was really cool and it was fun to see everyone competing and working together in the gym at once. I’ll definitely be taking part in future challenges and look forward to whatever we have next.

I’m now fully into this. I just upped to the one year unlimited membership, so I’ll be upping the number of times I’m there a week to 5. We’ll see how it goes and how my improvement and change continues. So far, CrossFit has been a huge blessing to me. I’m sure it’ll keep up.

Stay classy.
