The CrossFit Diaries: Cleaning Cluster

I felt awesome after Monday, not really sore or tight at all. Even today (Wednesday) I still don’t really feel too tight or sore in my legs, which is pleasantly surprising. Overall I’m feeling great and I’ve been really trying to watch my diet more to try and shed some weight. I really do want to lighten up a bit, if nothing else to help me more in my endurance. Hauling around this 265-270 lb frame isn’t exactly desirable. We’ll see if the changes I’ve implemented make a difference.

Take 12 minute to build up to a heavy 1.1.1 Clean Cluster

Workout of the Day:

Complete as many rounds as possible in 10 minutes of:

5 Power Cleans

5 Thrusters

10 Burpees

For the cleans I got successfully through 245 lbs without too much trouble and tried to squeeze one last set of 265 lbs in. I got one, but couldn’t get the second and stopped. I didn’t want to hurt myself and push it too far, especially since we were doing power cleans in the WOD. I felt fine and realistically just tried to push to quickly for the last couple of reps. I’m sure I could have done the last two reps if I had taken some time, but I was happy and ready to get down to the nitty gritty of the WOD.

The WOD. Oh the WOD. Power cleans? Sure. Thrusters? Sucky, but I can deal with them. Burpees? Tough. Killer really. I knew they would slow me down and be the limiting factor for the workout. Given the lower rep number for power cleans and thrusters, I went with 135 lb. It was a solid weight where it was challenging, but not overwhelming, especially when it came to the last couple of rounds. I completed 4 full rounds plus the power cleans on the 5th. Overall it was right around where I figured I’d finish in the 10 minute time cap. If it was 12 it would have been 5 full and partial on a 6. I’m not sure what it is about burpees that completely decimate me, but they do. Every time, without fail, they are what keep me from really blowing the doors off of a workout. If anyone has tips on improving with these, I would gladly welcome them. I’m going to try and talk to Marcus and/or Jason about it to see if they have any advice. It is an obstacle I want to overcome and get better at.

On the muscle up front, I worked more on my kipping and hip pop to get up to the rings. I’m close. I will have one by the end of the month, and might even have one by the end of the week. Marcus was teasing me that he isn’t sure if the rings are weighted to handle me. I told him if I somehow pulled what are likely to be 6 inch lag bolts out of cement, then either I’ve got some serious issues, or there is something wrong with the bolt/cement. Here’s to hoping the rings don’t collapse when I do a muscle up.

Stay classy.
