The CrossFit Diaries: Let’s Get Open

Two morning workouts in a row and Thursdays (and Tuesdays) are at 5:45 am. That alarm went off way too early, but up and at ’em to get the day going. I do like working out in the morning, in fact I prefer it. The problem really is being so far away from the gym that it makes all the stuff after working out and getting ready for work more difficult. When I move downtown, I’ll be a full-time a.m. guy, but for now it’s nice to sprinkle it in to change things up.

Strength/Skill:

Strength Make Up and Goal Development

Workout of the Day:

Open Workout 11.1

Complete as many rounds as possible in 10 minutes of:

30 Double Unders

15 Snatch (75/55 lbs)

Strength was a no brainer, I made up Monday and did squats. It was a 6, 6, 4, 4, 2, 2 grouping. It was great to get in and squat this morning. I wasn’t able to get to the last set of 2 simply because I ran out of time, but I worked up to 405 and would have done 425 on the last one. I laughed with Jason because I was acting all bummed and disappointed because I only squatted 405 this morning. That little bit of perspective was nice to laugh about.

I was unsure about how the WOD would be simply because the snatch weight was light but it is an AMRAP and I tend to really slow down at the end of them. I attempted double unders at the start, but just couldn’t get them so I stuck with 60 single unders throughout, which admittedly makes the whole thing a little easier overall. I ended up doing 5 full rounds and got to 6 snatches in the 6th round. Pretty pumped about that overall for the day and it was a hell of a way to start the day. I know the top guys at the gym will get around 7 or 8 rounds, but being the highest in the morning class was pretty sweet. I know if I keep working, I’ll be one of those top guys, I just can’t stop or quit with the great momentum.

There was one thing that bothered me this morning and I don’t know why it still does. There was a guy in the class who was working next to me who did around the same number of rounds with one exception, he wasn’t doing nearly all of the snatches. I was working on  my snatches at about 2 to his 1, but somehow he’d start jump roping with me at the same time. It doesn’t bother me that he did the same number of rounds, that’s good for him. What bothers me is all he is doing is cheating himself by doing partial rounds. Why would you want to do that? It just doesn’t make sense to me why someone would do that. Oh well, some people just do things differently and there is nothing we can do about it.

Stay classy.
